EffectCraft: a free, open-source Adobe After Effects alternative

What EffectCraft 0.8.0 is, what it already does, and where it still falls short of Adobe After Effects. Based only on the official EffectCraft README and docs.

Looking for a free alternative to Adobe After Effects? EffectCraft is one option. Its README describes it like this:

Motion graphics and visual effects; an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Adobe After Effects, rebuilt in pure Rust.

It's made by the ArtCraft team, licensed MIT OR Apache-2.0, and published for macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, plus a web build. The latest version is v0.8.0.

What it does well

According to the README:

  • After Effects-style workflow: compositions, layers, keyframes, 306 effects, layer styles, expressions, 3D cameras and lights, and a render queue.
  • Familiar panels: Project, Composition, Timeline, Effect Controls, and Effects & Presets.
  • Lottie import and export built in.
  • Readable project files: versioned JSON (.ecproj) that diffs cleanly in version control.
  • No FFmpeg: video and audio decoding and encoding are pure Rust.

How far along it is

The README calls EffectCraft alpha: its first commit was on 1 October 2026, about 91% of After Effects' features exist, and the team estimates it is about 45% of the way to replacing After Effects for professional work.

What's still missing

The README lists these gaps, among others:

  • After Effects projects (.aep / .aepx) can't be opened, and After Effects plug-ins don't run
  • behaviour still differs from After Effects in places, and renders aren't automatically compared yet
  • macOS is the most tested platform
  • the trained models (Roto Brush, face tracking) are new

The full, ranked list is in the project's docs/gaps.md.

Should you switch?

Try EffectCraft if you want a free, open-source motion graphics and VFX compositor that feels familiar to Adobe After Effects users, runs on Linux or in a browser, or can be scripted. For client work, test your own files first. The project describes itself as early-stage software.

Adobe After Effects is a trademark of Adobe. It is named here only to describe what EffectCraft is modeled on.
