FilmCraft: a free, open-source Adobe Premiere Pro alternative

What FilmCraft 0.6.0 is, what it already does, and where it still falls short of Adobe Premiere Pro. Based only on the official FilmCraft README and docs.

Looking for a free alternative to Adobe Premiere Pro? FilmCraft is one option. Its README describes it like this:

Video editing, color and sound; an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Premiere Pro, rebuilt in pure Rust.

It's made by the ArtCraft team, licensed MIT OR Apache-2.0, and published for macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, plus a web build. The latest version is v0.6.0.

What it does well

According to the README:

  • Familiar: the same panels, workspaces, tools and shortcuts as Premiere, according to the README.
  • Own codecs: the H.264, HEVC, ProRes and AAC codecs are the project's own, written in Rust from the public specifications.
  • Works today: editing, trimming, multicam, colour, keyframes, effects, titles, captions, mixing, codecs and export.
  • Everywhere: native on macOS, Windows and Linux, and the same engine and UI in the browser via WebAssembly.
  • Built for agents: a JSON-lines control server and an MCP server.

How far along it is

The README calls FilmCraft alpha. Measured on 2026-10-10 against Premiere Pro 26.5.2: feature breadth is about 86%, and "ready for real work" is about 56%.

What's still missing

The README lists these gaps, among others:

  • speed on big footage (Lumetri, keys and export rendering still run on the CPU)
  • .prproj files can't be opened yet; bring sequences over as FCP7 XML, AAF or OTIO
  • no VST3 / Audio Units or OpenFX plug-in hosting
  • H.264 is the only software delivery-codec export, and there is no AV1 export yet
  • real-world camera and phone files are less tested, and so are Windows and Linux

The full, ranked list is in the project's docs/gaps.md.

Should you switch?

Try FilmCraft if you want a free, open-source video editor that feels familiar to Adobe Premiere Pro users, runs on Linux or in a browser, or can be scripted. For client work, test your own files first. The project describes itself as early-stage software.

Adobe Premiere Pro is a trademark of Adobe. It is named here only to describe what FilmCraft is modeled on.
