LightCraft: a free, open-source Adobe Lightroom alternative
What LightCraft 0.6.0 is, what it already does, and where it still falls short of Adobe Lightroom. Based only on the official LightCraft README and docs.

Looking for a free alternative to Adobe Lightroom? LightCraft is one option. Its README describes it like this:
Photo library and raw development; an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Lightroom, rebuilt in pure Rust.
It's made by the ArtCraft team, licensed MIT OR Apache-2.0, and published for macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, plus a web build. The latest version is v0.6.0.
What it does well
According to the README:
- Pure Rust raw decoders: DNG, Canon CR2/CR3, Sony ARW, Nikon NEF, Fujifilm RAF (incl. X-Trans), Panasonic RW2 / Leica RWL, Pentax PEF and Olympus ORF.
- Scene-referred, wide-gamut pipeline: linear Rec.2020 float internally, with gamut mapping instead of clipping.
- GPU-accelerated, CPU-exact: the develop pipeline runs as wgpu compute kernels (Metal / Vulkan / DX12), checked against the CPU pipeline.
- Local-first: no account, no cloud, no telemetry and no subscription. The catalog is an append-only log of human-readable operations.
- Agent-ready: drivable end to end by AI agents over MCP.
How far along it is
The README calls LightCraft alpha: by feature count it is at about 81% of Lightroom (core features 98%), and as a day-to-day replacement nearer 61% for the whole product, about 49% for a typical working photographer and about 64% for casual use.
What's still missing
The README lists these gaps, among others:
- measured camera colour calibration
- compressed Olympus raws and unsupported CR3 variants
- AI masks and denoise (subject and sky selection are classical heuristics)
- on-screen HDR display, video, and the Classic Print / Book / Map modules
The full, ranked list is in the project's docs/gaps.md.
Should you switch?
Try LightCraft if you want a free, open-source photo library and raw developer that feels familiar to Adobe Lightroom users, runs on Linux or in a browser, or can be scripted. For client work, test your own files first. The project describes itself as early-stage software.
Adobe Lightroom is a trademark of Adobe. It is named here only to describe what LightCraft is modeled on.
