Looking for a free alternative to Adobe Acrobat? PdfCraft is one option. Its README describes it like this:
The PDF workbench; an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Acrobat, rebuilt in pure Rust.
It's made by the ArtCraft team, licensed MIT OR Apache-2.0, and published for macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, plus a web build. The latest version is v0.6.0.

What it does well
According to the README:
- Faithful: world scripts, vertical Japanese, colour emoji, gradients, soft masks and transparency.
- Fearless: every save appends your changes and leaves the original bytes untouched, and writes are atomic.
- Yours: no account, no telemetry, no cloud. It works offline.
- Good today: viewing and search; organizing, combining and splitting; most kinds of comment; filling and authoring forms; passwords, redaction and sanitizing; basic digital signatures; printing.
- Scriptable:
pdfcraft-clicovers inspecting, rendering, extracting text, editing, combining, extracting pages and splitting.
How far along it is
As of October 2026 the README calls PdfCraft alpha: most of Acrobat Pro's offline features exist in some form (57% of all tracked features, 94% of the must-haves).
What's still missing
The README lists these gaps, among others:
- reliable editing of existing text (especially CJK and right-to-left)
- OCR beyond Latin script
- Office import/export
- Preflight and PDF/X/UA
- printing on Windows
- pages are still drawn by the
hayrocrate while the project's own renderer is built
The full, ranked list is in the project's docs/gaps.md.
Should you switch?
Try PdfCraft if you want a free, open-source PDF workbench that feels familiar to Adobe Acrobat users, runs on Linux or in a browser, or can be scripted. For client work, test your own files first. The project describes itself as early-stage software.
Adobe Acrobat is a trademark of Adobe. It is named here only to describe what PdfCraft is modeled on.
