WordCraft: a free, open-source Microsoft Word alternative

What WordCraft 0.5.0 is, what it already does, and where it still falls short of Microsoft Word. Based only on the official WordCraft README and docs.

Looking for a free alternative to Microsoft Word? WordCraft is one option. Its README describes it like this:

Writing and document design; an open-source, clean-room reimplementation of Microsoft Word, rebuilt in pure Rust.

It's made by the ArtCraft team, licensed MIT OR Apache-2.0, and published for macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, plus a web build. The latest version is v0.5.0.

What it does well

According to the README:

  • Familiar: Word's ribbon tabs, groups, shortcuts and behaviour. For example, F4 repeats, F7 checks spelling and F8 extends the selection.
  • Your files: opens and saves .docx, plus .odt, .rtf, .html, .md, .tex and .txt; opens Word 97-2003 .doc; exports PDF with selectable text, links and bookmarks.
  • References and review: table of contents, footnotes, citations and bibliography (APA, MLA, Chicago, IEEE), track changes, comments, compare documents.
  • Mailings: mail merge from CSV, envelopes and labels.
  • Fast: the README reports typing in a 188-page document re-lays it out in about 1.4 ms.
  • Private and agent-ready: spelling and grammar work offline, and the same 422 commands drive the ribbon, CLI, JSON control channel and MCP server.

How far along it is

The README calls WordCraft alpha: it covers 88% of Word's ribbon features with commands. Counting depth, file fidelity and stability, the team estimates about 60% of the way to replacing all of Word, about 55% for a typical professional's weekly work and about 63% for everyday essentials.

What's still missing

According to the README, beta still needs:

  • testing against real-world .docx files
  • keeping charts and SmartArt through a round trip
  • pagination closer to Word's
  • a stability sweep
  • native printing

The full, ranked list is in the project's docs/gaps.md.

Should you switch?

Try WordCraft if you want a free, open-source word processor that feels familiar to Microsoft Word users, runs on Linux or in a browser, or can be scripted. For client work, test your own files first. The project describes itself as early-stage software.
